Privacy Policy — Lumos: Sun and Moon Tracker
This policy covers Lumos: Sun and Moon Tracker on iOS and Android (including beta versions), published by Luminous Labs LLC. It also briefly covers this website. The short version: Lumos is built to need as little of your data as possible, and Luminous Labs operates no servers of its own.
The short version
- No accounts. Lumos has no sign-up, login, or user registration of any kind.
- Your location is never sent to Luminous Labs. Astronomical positions are computed on the device itself. Location search, maps, and Street View send queries and coordinates to Apple or Google to return results — with no identity attached (see Location and Maps below).
- Your camera feed never leaves your device. The augmented-reality view draws overlays on it locally; nothing is uploaded.
- No advertising identifiers, no tracking across apps. Lumos does not read your device's advertising ID and shows no ads.
- Anonymous analytics and crash reports are collected so we can improve the app. They are not linked to your identity.
- Luminous Labs operates no servers. The only data that leaves your device goes directly to the third-party services described below.
Location
Lumos uses your device's location to calculate the positions of the sun and moon for where you are. Those calculations happen entirely on your device. Your location is never transmitted to Luminous Labs, is never included in analytics or crash reports, is not stored beyond the app's own use, and is never used for advertising or profiling. Location access is optional — Lumos works with a manually chosen location if you decline the permission.
Some features are powered by mapping services, and those requests do carry coordinates or search text. When you search for a place, the text you type is sent to Apple (on iOS) or Google (on Android) so matching locations can be returned, and coordinates are sent to the same services to look up place names and to load map and Street View imagery (see Maps below). These requests carry no identity: Lumos never tells these services who you are or which coordinate is your actual location — from their side, a coordinate could equally be where you are standing, a place you searched for, or a random point tapped on the map.
Camera and photos
The augmented-reality view uses your camera so that Lumos can draw the sky's paths over the live image. The camera feed is processed on your device only and is never uploaded by Lumos. If you choose to save a snapshot or record a video of the augmented-reality view, the image or video is written to your device's photo library and stays under your control; recordings are made without sound and are never transmitted.
Analytics and crash reporting
Lumos uses two analytics services to understand overall usage and to fix problems:
- Google Firebase (analytics and crash reporting). Reports describe app events and crashes in general terms — for example which screens are used and where the app failed — along with general device information such as model and OS version. Crash reports contain no identifying information. Firebase's handling of this data is described in Google's privacy documentation for Firebase.
- Superwall (subscription screens and purchase-flow analytics). Superwall powers the app's subscription screens and receives the same anonymous usage events that Firebase does — covering general app usage as well as the subscription flow — along with general device information such as model and OS version. These services generate their own random identifiers so that events from the same installation can be grouped. Those identifiers are not connected to your name, email, location, or any account, and Lumos does not read your device's advertising identifier on either platform.
Feedback and support
The in-app Feedback & Support module is powered by UserVoice. If you submit feedback or open a support ticket, you will be asked for your email address (required, so we can reply), and UserVoice records your IP address as part of processing the submission. Everything else in your message is what you choose to write. This information is used only to respond to you and improve the app, and is handled under UserVoice's privacy policy as well as this one. UserVoice also collects its own anonymous usage analytics within the feedback screens (for example, which feedback pages you view and what you search for there), using a random identifier that is not connected to your identity. Feedback is the one place where Lumos knowingly handles information that can identify you — and only because you sent it.
Maps
Lumos displays maps using Apple Maps on iOS and Google Maps on Android, and offers Google Street View on both platforms. When a map or panorama is shown, your device communicates with Apple's or Google's servers to load imagery for the coordinates being viewed, and Lumos also asks Google whether Street View imagery is available for a location — on iOS this check happens as you browse the map. These requests contain only coordinates, with no identity attached, and are subject to Google's Privacy Policy and Apple's Privacy Policy.
Purchases
Subscriptions and purchases are processed entirely by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play). Luminous Labs never receives or stores your payment details. We see only the anonymous purchase-flow analytics described above and the aggregate sales reporting that Apple and Google provide to all developers.
Notifications
Sunrise, sunset, and other alerts are computed and scheduled locally on your device. No push-notification service is involved and no data is transmitted to deliver them.
Children
Lumos is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Your choices and your data
Because Lumos has no accounts and its analytics are not linked to your identity, Luminous Labs has no way to look up data about you specifically — which also means we cannot retrieve or delete "your" analytics records on request, because we cannot tell which records are yours. Deleting the app removes all locally stored data, and a reinstall generates fresh anonymous analytics identifiers unconnected to the old ones. For anything you submitted through Feedback & Support, email us and we will delete the correspondence and associated ticket data, except where we need to retain specific records to comply with a legal obligation or to resolve an active or reasonably anticipated dispute (for example, a billing disagreement). Any records retained on those grounds are kept only as long as that reason applies.
This website
luminouslabs.co is a static site. It sets no cookies and runs no analytics. It is hosted on GitHub Pages, and its fonts are served by Google Fonts; those services may log standard technical information such as IP addresses when your browser requests the page, under GitHub's privacy statement and Google's Privacy Policy.
Changes to this policy
If our data practices change, this policy will be updated here and the effective date revised. Material changes will be noted in the app's release notes.
